In
February of 2001 the experimental release of 25 elk into Great
Smoky Mountains National Park began. In 2002 they released another 27
animals. Most of the elk are located in the Cataloochee area in the
southeastern section of the park. The best times to view elk are usually
early morning and late evening. Please be advised that it is illegal to come
within 150 feet of an elk in the GSMNP. Elk should be viewed with
binoculars, telephoto lens, or a spotting scope from the roadside.
