Cemeteries on the North Shore of Fontana Lake




List of cemeteries that are located on the north Shore of Fontana Lake and the surrounding area which were eventually taken over by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Service after the Tennessee Valley Authority built the Fontana Dam.

  • Bradshaw Cemetery: On Possum Hollow Branch on Hazel Creek. Hickory Bottom Branch on Possum Hollow. On right of the branch, first ridge. Approximately one quarter of a mile from Old Possum Hollow Road at Bradshaw House Place. 17 Graves. Last burial: 26 Old Soldiers Graves.
  • Bone Valley Cemetery: On Hazel Creek at the mouth of Bone Valley Creek. West on second ridge. Approximately one quarter of a mile from Truck Trail. Trail leaves first ridge west to cemetery. 79-82 Graves. Last Burial: Jesse H. Hall 8-23-43.
  • Cable Cemetery: Approximately 0.3 miles north of Fontana Lake high water mark. East of the mouth of Hazel Creek in Second Sharp Hollow north on crest of ridge. 155-160 Graves. Last Burial: 1925.
  • Cable Branch Cemetery: On Hazel Creek. Northeast side of Cable Branch, 0.4 miles from Fontana Lake High Water Mark. Approximately 100 yards above old roadbed between 3 and 4 Branch near the 4 Branch on Ridge Crest. 25-26 Graves. Last Burial: 1943.
  • Calhoun Family Cemetery: One fourth mile up Proctor Creek, One fourth mile south west on Piney Ridge. 2 Graves.
  • Conner Cemetery: On Hickory Flat Branch one-half mile south from Fontana Lake on the left side of the old road on main branch. 14-16 Graves. Last Burial: 1936
  • Fairview Cemetery: 0.3 miles north on Fontana Lake high water mark. Between Wayside Creek on Pase Branch and Calhoun Branch on first large ridge. 71-72 Graves. Last Burial: 1943.
  • Farley or Proctor Cemetery: On Hazel Creek. North of mouth of Possum Hollow Creek. Twenty-five yards above old Possum Hollow Road. 172 Graves. Last Burial: 1944.
  • Forks of the Creek Cemetery: Noland Creek, eleven miles north from Fontana Lake on right side of old road and right side of main creek, two miles from old Ross House Place. 40 Graves. Last Burial: Unknown
  • Green Cemetery: on the left bank of and 1000 feet from the Little Tennessee River approximately 1.3 miles northwest of Judson, NC on old Pierson Green property. 6 Graves. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Hall Cemetery: On Bone Valley Creek on Hazel Creek. Northeast from Kress Place approximately 0.4 miles across first branch. One hundred yards from branch water in take for Kress Place.300 yards north from right hand forks branch or Big Flat Branch. 18 Graves. Last Burial: 1925 Ruby Della Hall (03-29-15)
  • Higdon Cemetery: On Sugar Fork on Hazel Creek. At junction of Sugar Fork Creek on first ridge. 17 Graves. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Hoyle Cemetery: On Bear Creek on Forney Creek, approximately one mile from Forney Creek up on Bear Creek. 4 Graves. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Laney Cemetery: Upper Indian Creek, up Indian Creek approximately 3.5 miles from Deep Creek Campgrounds, some 1,200 feet on left of road.
  • McClure Cemetery: Head of Welch Branch, left of the road. One-fifth mile from J.C. Welch’s old house place on the ridge. 8-10 Graves. Last Burial: 1935.
  • Mill Branch Cemetery: On the right bank of Mill Branch, .25 mile northwest of Fairview school on knoll in woods 300 feet northwest of old house, on old W.H. Clark property. 2 Graves. No Markers. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Mitchel Cemetery: On Chesquaw Branch approximately one mile from Fontana Lake on high water mark. On left of bank on ridge crest. Crest near the low gap. Approximately 400 yards from branch northwest approximately 0.4 miles from Jim Michel old home place. 5 Graves. Last Burial: 1938.
  • Montieth-Noland Creek Cemetery: Approximately seven miles north from Fontana Lake, across from old Bob Patterson Place, on left side of old road and main branch. 12-15 Graves.
  • Nelmes Cemetery: On watershed of Calhoun Branch. Approximately 0.4 miles from Fontana high water mark. On left of old road that leads to Rhine Branch from Calhoun Branch. Southwest approximately 400 yards on first large ridge crest. Go west toward Pase Branch. 5 Graves. Last Burial: 1933.
  • Noland, Lower Cemetery: On the right bank of Noland Creek, on old I.K. Stearns property. 12 Graves. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Noland, Upper Cemetery: On the right bank of Noland Creek, on the old Phillip G. Rust property. 28 Graves. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Orr Cemetery: Five yards south of old NC 288.0.4 miles from NC 28 at Cheoah Lake. Where 288 joins 28.Highway below Fontana. 11 Graves. Last Burial: 1937.
  • Payne Cemetery: One hundred yards south of NC 288.0.4 miles from highway across Dam at Fontana. 118 Graves. Last burial 1957.
  • Pilkey Cemetery: On Pilkington Creek approximately 0.4 miles from Fontana Lake high water mark, on left prong of creek across first ford.300 yards from creek on old road on first large ridge. 41 Graves. Last Burial 1941.
  • Posey Cemetery: On Pilkington Creek approximately one mile from Fontana Lake high water mark on left prong of Pilkington Creek, 300 yards northwest from creek on old road bed on crest of second ridge. 200 yards northwest from Andy Posey house on point of Piney Ridge. 3 Graves. Last Burial: 1944.
  • Proctor Cemetery: On the right bank of Hazel Creek, on the north side of Possum Hollow Road in what was once known as Proctor, NC. 192 Graves. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Queen Cemetery: Up Indian Creek Road approximately 2.1 miles from Deep Creek Campground. Some 400 feet on right of road. 40 Graves.
  • Stiles Cemetery: On Hickory Flat Branch one mile north from Fontana Lake on left side of old road and main branch. 6 Graves. Last Burial 1942.
  • Scott Anthony Cemetery: (Welch Cemetery) On Kirkland Branch approximately 0.3 miles from Fontana high water mark, 200 yards from old highway 288 on first ridge crest in fork of branch. 14 Graves.
  • Welch Cemetery #1: On the right bank of the Little Tennessee River, on the north side of NC Hwy 288 opposite the mouth of David Welch Branch on old H.S. Anthony property. 15 Graves. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Welch Cemetery #2: On the left bank and 2000 feet from the Little Tennessee River, on top of ridge 450 feet south of the Judson-Robbinsville Road at point 1.3 miles southest of Judson, NC. On the old Forest Denton property. 3 Graves. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Wiggins Cemetery: On the left bank of Upper Noland Creek . 3 Graves. 1 monument. Last Burial: Unknown.
  • Wiggins or Watson Cemetery: Toms Branch, up 1.1 miles on Toms Branch Road. 20 Graves.
  • Woody Cemetery: On Forney Creek approximately one mile up on Gray Wolf Branch from Fontana Lake high water mark. 200 yards northwest from branch on crest of third ridge left of branch. 63 Graves. Last Burial 1913.
