Waterfalls of Western NC and Northern GA
Waterfalls and many cascades are located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Nantahala National Forest, around the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Pisgah National Forest and the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina and Northern Georgia. These include the spectacular 411 feet Whitewater Falls which is the tallest series of falls east of the Mississippi.

Waterfalls emit negative ions that cause a person to have feelings of peace and tranquility while also feeling alert and invigorated. Negative ions are produced by the energy of falling water crashing against rocks. As the falling water breaks up into small droplets, electrons which are the negatively charged parts of an atom, are knocked loose from the water atoms. These electrons combine with oxygen atoms charging the air with negative ions.

Facts About Ions
  • Yosemite Falls - A reading of 100,000 negative air ions per cubic centimeter was recorded at Yosemite Falls in California.
  • Fresh Country Air - On average there are 1,500 to 4,000ions found in a cubic centimeter of fresh country air (this is the space that a 1/2 inch cube would occupy).
  • Work Environments - In work environments where there are many computers and various other electrical equipment it is posible for the ions to all be positively charged.
  • Freeway During Rush Hour - On a freeway during rush hour there are on the average only 100 negative ions per cubic centimeter.
